Overview
A goliath (or gantry) crane is a single or double girder overhead crane carried on freestanding legs that travel on wheels, castors or a rail/track system - built for sites that need overhead lifting without permanent building-mounted runway beams and support columns. AMBAT ICONCRANES supplies goliath and semi-goliath cranes in both single and double girder configurations, engineered to the same IS 807/3177 duty classification used across its EOT range.
Key Features
- Freestanding leg structure - no building runway beams or support columns required
- Single or double girder configuration
- Fixed rail/track (large systems) or portable castor-mounted (light-duty, relocatable) options
- Crab assembly for hoist travel along the girder
- Compatible with the same duty classification and hoist range as EOT cranes
Benefits
- Significant civil/structural cost reduction versus a similarly specified bridge crane, since no permanent runway steel is needed
- Deployable outdoors or below an existing bridge crane system
- Portable configurations can be repositioned around a facility for maintenance or light fabrication work
- Standardised duty classification means goliath and EOT cranes on the same site share maintenance and spares
Technical Specifications
- Configuration: Single or double girder, freestanding leg support
- Travel: Wheels, castors, or embedded rail/track system
- Duty Class: IS 807/3177 classification, matched to EOT crane range
- Deployment: Fixed-line (stockyards, coil yards, port areas) or portable (maintenance, light fabrication)
Available Models / Variants
- Full goliath crane - Large systems on embedded rail/track, straight-line dedicated work area
- Semi-goliath crane - One side on freestanding legs, one side on a building runway beam
- Portable gantry - Castor or wheel mounted, relocatable around a facility
Applications
- Stockyards and coil yards.
- Open fabrication and assembly bays.
- Below an existing bridge crane system.
- Port cargo and container handling areas.
- Sites without structural runway capacity.
Industries Served
- Steel & Metal Stockyards
- Ports & Container Terminals

Why Choose Our Product
- Avoids the civil cost of permanent runway beams and support columns for outdoor or non-runway sites
- Matched duty classification to the rest of the AMBAT ICONCRANES crane range for consistent maintenance and spares
- Both fixed-rail and portable configurations available from one manufacturer
Manufacturing & Quality Process
Goliath crane legs, girder and crab assembly are fabricated and machined at the Ambernath (MIDC) factory using the same IS 807/3177-referenced quality process used across the EOT crane range, so a plant can standardise maintenance and spares even when goliath and EOT cranes are mixed on one site.
Product Comparison
| Feature | Goliath Crane | Double Girder EOT (Bridge Crane) |
|---|---|---|
| Support Structure | Freestanding legs (no runway needed) | Building-mounted runway beams |
| Best For | Outdoor sites, stockyards, no-runway buildings | Indoor heavy lifting |
| Civil Cost | Lower | Higher |
| Mobility | Portable option available | Fixed to building runway |
Certifications & Compliance
- IS 807/3177 duty classification, matched to EOT crane range
- AISE, DIN, JIS, FEM references for export/specialised builds
Installation & Maintenance
Installation covers leg and rail/track alignment (for fixed systems) or wheel/castor assembly (for portable systems), followed by crab and hoist commissioning and load testing. AMC coverage follows the same inspection and preventive maintenance structure as the EOT crane range - see the Services page.
Accessories & Compatible Products
- Crab assembly
- Wire rope electric hoist (see Hoist page)
- Control panel / VFD
- Anti-collision device for multi-crane sites
